Teacher/ Mentor/ Leader

"The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change."

– Carl Rogers

The opportunity to seek higher education in the educational leadership and supervision program allowed me to get back why. The program at Mississippi College has boosted my credentials in the job market and made my career journey easier. I also have gained an interest in leadership aspects across all entities of life. I love being a leader who seeks progress in both human resources and organizations. I loved the opportunity to grow and learn in the master's program since it harnesses the skills I have acquired in my previous studies and practices. I have adjusted to the new standards created by the pandemic through ensuring I have the time table before hand and having class materials before the lectures are taken. I have also strategized to meet with stakeholders and community leaders. The master's program was great since I also had the opportunity to grow in my career while still attending school. It would be an honor to be part of the Educational Leadership journey since it would benefit not only me but also the community.

Introduction

My name is Ciante’ Barber. I am from a small town in North Mississippi called Holly Springs, MS. I currently lived in Holly Springs, MS but have plans to further my Educational Leadership journey in another state. I graduated from Holly Springs High School in 2011. I received double degrees from the University of Mississippi in Psychology and Communication Disorders in 2017. I have been employed at my alma mater since 2017 as an English teacher. Since being here, I have taught English I, Compensatory Writing, ACT Prep, English- III, English- IV, and Facilitated Dual Enrollments Courses. I am the Senior sponsor, ELA Department Lead, National Honor Society Advisor, Hawk Pride Club sponsor, and a practicing administrator. I have been awarded the Outstanding Teacher of Marshall County for 3 year, STAR Teacher for 2 years, and chosen as the National High School Honor Society Educator of Distinction Award.

Education was never my route when pursuing my Bachelor’s degree. It was the summer of 2017 when I realized that the youth in my community did not have any support when it came to their education. Their lack of support became my passion. The dream of success motivated me to become an educator. Not my success, my students’ success. I push myself through the rough spots for them, and that is why I enjoy education.

What I Do...

Work With Stakeholders

    • Throughout the course of the program, I have diligently worked administrators to better understand student growth. One experience that was very eye-opening was Data Driven Decision Making. This experience involved me spear-headed our weekly PLC meetings with an administrator. The experience involved close work with teachers in the ELA department, targeted students, and parent contacting.

Solve Issues

    • One major issue we all face is cheating, Since the COVID, students have been able to easily cheat on tests, baseline, homework, and interventions. After analyzing data. I was able to produce a system were students used less time on their Chromebook and using hands on strategies during direct instruction days. As a result, we have a better lockdown browser, only use computers on grouping days, and take tests in a paper format.

Mobilize Resources

    • During the experience, I was able to contact Marshall County’s former TST Coordinator (Wyhem Patterson) for advice on how to increase student achievement. Patterson shared that PLC meetings and effective data analysis has helped his district to achieve accountability points. After speaking with Patterson, I was able to convince our administrators to push more reading during interventions and to purchase resources such as Progress Learning to increase data.

Respond to Community

    • As a student, I have learned that our community put more emphasis on sports instead of academics. I was able to have a positive relationship with Rust College this past academic school year to ensure that our students take advantage of their dual enrollment opportunities. Dual Enrollment numbers have grown tremendously and have helped our students to better understand Holly Springs School District’s mission and vision.
